"Violet Constance Jessop, beloved sister, who died 5th. May 1971 in her 84th. year, fortified by rites of Holy Mother Church. On her soul sweet Jesus have mercy." Violet Jessop was born in the Argentine, the eldest of six children of Irish parents who had emigrated from Dublin in order to work as sheep farmers. In 1903, she sailed to England and became a stewardess on the White Star Line. During her long years of service, she was present on three disastrous occasions. On the 20th. September 1911, she was on board R.M.S. Olympic when it collided with H.M.S. Hawke. The following April, she was a stewardess to the First-Class passengers on the Titanic; and, on the 21st. November 1916, she was on the Brittanic when it struck a mine in the Kea Channel of the Aegean Sea, with the loss of 28 lives. Violet Jessop was married, briefly, in the late 1920's, to a fellow crew member, but the marriage was so unsuccessful that her family do not know the name of her husband. In 1950, she retired from the sea and bought a cottage in Great Ashfield, in Suffolk. However, she is buried in the nearby village of Hartest, next to her sister and brother-in-law, Eileen and Hubert Meehan (qq.v.). Her memoirs, "Titanic Survivor", were published in 1997.
