Hunza-Naga Campaign Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Hastings Sussex, he served as a Captain in the Corps of Royal Engineers, British Army. On December 2, 1891, Captain Aylmer was in command of a storming party on the assault at Nilt Fort, British India. As his party reached the front gate, they forced open the inner gate with gun-cotton which Captain Aylmer had placed and ignited. Although severely wounded, Captain Aylmer fired 19 shots with his revolver, killing several of the enemy and remained fighting until, fainting from loss of blood, he was carried out of action. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was promoted Major and awarded the Victoria Cross. During World War I, he served as a General in command of the Tigris Corps, 7th Division, at the Battle of Hanna. He retired a Lieutenant General on February 25, 1919. He died at age 73 in Wimbledon, London. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
