Longtime Castleton Corners resident Miles B. Bilcher, 80, a loving family man and retired Sears technician, died Tuesday at Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton.

Born in Newark, he graduated from Central High School there and attended Lincoln Technical Institute, Edison, New Jersey.

He moved to Port Richmond in 1960 and also lived in Graniteville before settling in Castleton Corners forty-three years ago.

For thirty-four years, Mr. Bilcher worked as an air-conditioning and refrigeration technician for Sears Roebuck on Staten Island. He retired in 1996.

Mr. Bilcher served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper for two years, stationed stateside. He was a member of the Staten Island Marine Corps League, and the John R. Tamburri Post, AMVETS.

He loved sports and had served as a referee for the Staten Island Boys Football League in Travis, as well as the Public School Athletic League's high school division.

Mr. Bilcher was an avid reader and a history buff. He enjoyed fishing, solving crossword puzzles, and watching "Jeopardy"" He also liked playing horseshoes at Toto's in South Beach.

Most of all, he delighted in time spent with his five grandchildren Ashley, Nikki, Grant, Brian, and Pierce and his many nieces and nephews, said his wife, the former Irene Zawada.

Mr. Bilcher's son, Brian, a firefighter with Squad 1 in Brooklyn, was killed in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Mr. Bilcher was very close with his daughter-in-law, Tina Bilcher-Murphy, and her husband, Craig Murphy.

Surviving, along with Irene, his wife of forty-eight years, are his daughter, Laura Bilcher-Steffensen; two brothers, Charles and Kingsley; a sister, Lorna O'Hara; and five grandchildren.

The funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners.
Arrangements include private cremation.
