Eddie "Michael" Blackard, 67, of 488 Blackard Road, Roxboro, passed away Saturday, March 5, at his home surrounded by his family.
Mr. Blackard was born November 4, 1943, in Person County, son of the late John Irving Blackard and Nellie Walker Blackard. Michael grew up in Roxboro on a tobacco farm, which he continued to farm until cancer left him unable to work this year. He loved the land and his work, and he enjoyed sharing his love of the farm.

In 1993, Michael co-founded the Flat River Antique Engine & Tractor Club in order to preserve Person County's agricultural heritage. The Club held an annual antique tractor and engine show since its founding, raising money for Home Health & Hospice of Person County. In its 18-year history, the Club has raised nearly $100,000 for the organization.

Michael's love of Person County and its people was evident to all who knew him. He also enjoyed meeting people from different places and cultures, learning about them, and introducing them to his farm and its joys. Through this generosity of spirit, Michael made friends far and wide—he liked people, and they liked him.

The expressions of love and support Michael received during his brief battle with cancer was overwhelming; people came to tell him how much he was loved and how much he would be missed. This brought him and his family much comfort and happiness in his final days.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda Robinson Blackard; three children, Tammy Blackard Cook and husband Richard of Raleigh, Heath Michael Blackard and wife Darcy Freedman of Columbia, SC, and Dawn Blackard Smith and partner Travis Foltz of Roxboro; four grandchildren, Dylan Michael Smith, Lucy Blackard Cook, Sarah Elizabeth Blackard Cook, and Miles Freedman Blackard; one brother, John Irving Blackard Jr. of Roxboro; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by his brother, Bobby Gene Blackard.

The family will receive friends and family at Brooks and White Funeral Home on Monday evening, March 7, from 7:00 til 8:30 PM. A service to celebrate his life will be held Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at 11 am at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Roxboro. The Rev. Bob Baynard, the Rev. Ed Bogie, and the Rev. Troy Rust will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pall Bearers will be Calvin Whitfield, John Foushee, Joseph Hicks, Wayne Wilkerson, Jody Allison, Bruce Wrenn, LeRoy Culley, James Bradsher and Manley Dillard. Honorary Pall Bearers will be members of Flat River Antique Tractor & Engine Club.
