Sunday noon, April seventh, Mr. Hachaliah Whitney departed this life. Mr. Whitney had been failing in health for some months, altho he was about until within a few days of his death. Mr. Whitney was the oldest, and lifelong resident of the community. He was born Aug. 31, 1822, being in his ninety-sixth year. Mr. Whitney and Matilda A Vrooman were united in marriage May 15, 1843. After nearly twenty-four years, Mrs. Whitney died Oct. 26 1867. A daughter, Frances Matilda, was born to this union. In January, 1869, Mr. Whitney and Hannah C. Stevens were married. After forty-four years, Feb. 21, 1913, Mrs. Whitney died.

Mr. Whitney's ancestors came from New England and were among the earliest settlers of this community about 1791. Mr. Whitney was five years old when the Presbyterian church edifice was erected, the church was organized in 1828. He was ever interested in the welfare of the church. He united with it in 1842 and was a regular attendant until in October last when failing health and unpleasant weather prevented. Mr. Whitney was one of the originators of the Castle Grange which was organized in 1873. In its early days the grange met for one year at his home east of the village. Mr. Whitney was modest, retiring in disposition but friendly and familiarly known as "Uncle Hack." He was a constant reader of the daily papers and kept in touch with current event until the end. The community sustains a loss. He leaves to mourn his departure a daughter, Mrs. Frances Matilda Carr, and two brothers, Byron and Cheney P. Whitney. The funeral will be held on Wednesday afternoon. Services at the house at 2:30 o'clock and at the Presbyterian church at 3:00 o'clock, the pastor, Rev. E. E. Grosh, officiating, assisted by Rev. H. H. Kellogg of Geneva, a former pastor, Interment in Whitney Cemetery.
