| Birth: | Oct. 27, 1829 | | Death: | Sep. 21, 1922 |  Civil War Union Brevet Major General. He was a Minnesota lawyer and was elected to the State Senator in 1859. Soon after the beginning of the Civil War he enlisted in the Army as a Private and was commissioned Captain in the 3rd Minnesota Infantry. He surrendered after a fight near Murfreesboro in October 1862 and was taken prisoner. After his exchange, he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 3rd Minnesota and was present in the operations at Vicksburg. He became Colonel in July 1863, served in the campaign that resulted in the capture of Little Rock, Arkansas and was placed in command of the brigade. During 1864, he was in command of the forces at Augusta, was promoted Brigadier General in command of the 2nd Division, 13th Corps and participated in the siege at Fort Blakely, Alabama. In March 1865, he was brevetted Major General, commanded the district of Mobile, Alabama and later that of Houston, Texas until the end of the war. After the war, he was appointed minister resident to Sweden and Norway, serving 1869 to 1877. From 1880 to 1885, he was supervisor of the United States census in the 3rd district of Minnesota and was Consul-General to Brazil. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
