Nellie Foster Preston was born August 14, 1871 to Charles Leonard and Betsy Malissa Preston at Marshall, Michigan and departed this life at the age of 88 years, 6 months and 8 days at 4:10 a.m. February 22, 1960 at her home in Gove.
In July 1878, at the age of seven years, she came with her parents to Phillips County, Kansas. She grew to womanhood in this vicinity and was united in marriage to Jerry Melroy Bretton February 2, 1888. To this union nine children were born.
In September of 1907 they moved to a farm 7 1/2 miles west of Gove in a covered wagon enduring the hardships of the true pioneers. After her husband's death in 1947 she made her home in Gove City.
She was a loving and patient mother, faithful wife and earnest Christian. Always thinking of others instead of herself she acted as midwife for many years in her community. She was united with the Baptist Church at Aleda, Kansasa, in 1905 and remained a member of that church until her death.
She loved quilting and gardening and was happy working in her flower beds.
Her husband, her parents, three sisters, two daughters Daisy and Cora, three grandchildren Ralph Litton, Keith Bretton, Cloyce Winsor preceded her in death.
She leaves to mourn their loss seven children: Leonard of Stratton, Colo.; Mrs. B. W. Litton, Mrs. Edmond Hannaford, Mrs. Lain Cleveland and Earl of Gove; Mrs. Dale Thomas of Shallow Water, Kas. and Jerry of Grinnell; two sisters Edith of Agra and Angie of Phillipsburg; 29 grandchildren; 70 great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
