Nicknamed ‘Cannonball' for his remarkable baseball, he was a left-handed pitcher making his debut for the Columbus Buckeyes on May 1, 1884. On May 29, 1884 he pitched a no-hitter against the Pittsburgh Alleghenys, winning 5–0 and was purchased by the Alleghenys from the Buckeyes five months later. For seven seasons, he played with the Columbus Buckeyes (1884), Pittsburgh Alleghenys (1885-89) and Pittsburg Burghers (1890). In 1886, he led the American Association with 41 wins and 12 shutouts. He concluded his career with a record of 171 wins, 122 loss, 1217 strikeouts, 297 complete games, 29 shutouts, 1 save and a 2.82 earned run average. He died in a bar fight at age 74.
