Governor of Florida from 1941 to 1945; United State Senator: A native of Bartow, he was a World War I veteran receiving the Distinquished Service Cross for valor. He served in the Florida Senate for eight years before being elected Governor. As governor he coordinated the state's World War II defense effort with the Federal government and established the Everglades National Park.
