Margaret Gilmore was the daughter of Myers Gilmore (1863-1946) and Elizabeth Thompson (1869-1952). She was born in Fort Collins, Colorado on Oct. 22, 1901. Margaret studied art at Long Beach High School under Carol Lewerenz, whose nephew she later married. After her education at the University of Colorado and at USC, she took classes at Chouinard Art School and in 1928 studied art in Vienna while her husband, Dr. Alfred Speir Lewerenz, studied psychology. Her watercolors and crafts won prizes at art exhibitions in southern California from the 1920's - 1940's. For 35 years she taught art in the Los Angeles high schools. She was also a member of the Art Teachers Association of Southern California and a resident of Glendale, California until her death on June 24, 1998.
