Survived by three sons, William E. Arms III, Steven D. Arms and Robert M. Arms; a daughter, Kathleen Ann McCutcheon, a sister, Mrs. Albert F. (Dixie Arms) Bittenbring; a brother, John P. Arms; and grandchildren, Christopher Keller, Rachael L. Arms, William D. Arms, Robert B. Arms, and Lauren McCutcheon.
Preceded in death by parents, Olive J. Lajaunie and William E. Arms Sr.; and stepfather, Robert L. Bordelon.
Self-employed with a business forms company and resident of New Orleans for 34 years, he died at 5:40 a.m. Friday, March 7, 1997, at Memorial Medical Center, Baptist Campus, New Orleans. He was 70, born Nov. 13, 1926, in New Orleans. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1943 to 1946.
He attended St. Cecilia Elementary School and St. Aloysius High School, both in New Orleans. Mississippi College, Clinton, Miss., 1943 to 1944 (U.S. Navy V-12A program), Southwestern Louisiana University, Lafayette, with a bachelor of science degree in 1948 and master of science degree in 1960, and investments, marketing and the Omega courses in commercial lending.
Past memberships include president and director of Ormond Golf and Country Club, director of Louisiana Chapter Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Kenner Business Association, president and director of Chateau Golf and Country Club, officer and director of Kiwanis Club of Lafayette and Rotary Club of Gentilly, district president for eight years, Louisiana Coaches Association, director of Lafayette Recreation Department, director of Louisiana Safety Commission, vice chairman of Southeast district of Louisiana Heart Association, United Fund loaned executive, Harvey Canal Industrial Association, industrial committee of Chamber of Commerce, president and director of Lafayette Men's Golf Association, Regional Planning Commission, Southeast Development Corp. member of Bank Marketing Association, American Bankers Association, Louisiana Bankers Association, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, University of Southwestern Louisiana "S" Club and Stonebridge Country Club.
He was an officer of Colonial Bank, New Orleans, Gulf South Bank, Gretna, and Merchants Bank, Kenner. He spent 20 years in education as a teacher, coach, athletic director and administrator at Lafayette High School and Cathedral High School, both in Lafayette, and St. Aloysius High School, New Orleans. He was Kenner YMCA 1980 outstanding fund-raiser, Bank Marketing Association guest speaker at 1973 national convention, Rotarian of the year in 1971, Kiwanian of the year in 1954,coach of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association South All Star football team in 1967, and coach of the year on 10 occasions and 14 team championships in three sports, football, basketball and baseball.
Visiting was held at All Faiths Funeral Home chapel, 5200 Canal Boulevard, New Orleans, Louisiana, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday, 9 March 1977, and from noon until funeral Mass at 2 p.m. Monday, 10 March 1997.
Interment was private.
