She was the daughter of architect Sidney Mason Stone,Harriett took the pen name of Margaret Sidney and was the author of the Five Little Pepper Series and many other books. She and her husband, published Daniel Lothrop lived at The Wayside and owned the Orchard House and Grapevine Cottage. She and her husband Daniel were very active preservationist.
In 1895 she approached the Daughters of The American Revolution about forming the National Society of the Children of the American Revolution,is the oldest patriotic organization for youth in the United States. Its mission is to train good citizens, develop leaders and promote love of the United States of America and its heritage among young people.
