Commissioned as Captain and commander of Company A, 23rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry at the start of the Civil War. Through his successive service he was promoted first to Major, then Lieuteant Colonel of the regiment, and served until the end of the conflict. Appointed as Postmaster General in the cabinet of President Grover Cleveland. serving from 1885 to 1888. In 1888 he was appointed as Secretary of the Interior, and served in that office until 1889. He was then elected as a Democratic Senator from Wisconsin to the United States Senate, serving from 1891 to 1897. He was unsuccessful in a 1896 reelection bid, having been defeated by Senator John Coit Spooner. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
