John J. "Jack" Clements

Major League Baseball Player. Played Major League baseball as a catcher for 17 seasons (1884 to 1900) with the Philadelphia Keystones of the Union Association, the Philadelphia Quakers/Phillies, St. Louis Browns (Cardinals), Cleveland Spiders (Indians) and Boston Beaneaters (Braves). A left-hander, he played 13 and 1/2 seasons for the Phillies, occasionally playing the outfield and infield in addition to his catching duties. He was the first left-hander to make a sustained Major League catching career, even though he played over 100 games in one season only twice. He hit a number of home runs during an era where they were rare, topping with 17 in 1893 (second in the National League only to teammate Ed Delahanty) and 13 in 1895 (finishing 3rd behind teammate Sam Thompson and Washington’s Bill Joyce). In 1898, while with St. Louis, he reached a milestone when he played in his 1,000 game, a first for a left-handed catcher. He retired in 1900 with career totals of 1,160 Games Played, 1,240 Hits, 619 Runs, 77 Home Runs, 687 RBIs and a .288 career Batting Average. In 1890 he managed the Phillies for 19 games.
