46th Governor of Tennessee. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as Tennessee's governor from 1987 until 1995. Raised on a farm, he worked as a traveling shoe salesman before earning his wealth as a business proprietor which included a truck line and beer distributorship. He launched his political career in 1968 as a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives (was Speaker of the House for a period) and served at that capacity until 1995. During his tenure as governor, McWherter was in favor of increased pay for teachers and smaller classroom size. He was a proponent for expanding medical coverage for the poor. He served as a political adviser to President Clinton and was on the US Postal Board. He died from cancer. (bio by: C.S.)
