Little is known of Steward's life from age 15-39, until he married Harriet Ellen (Babb) Barnett (see her link for their children). His father, John A. Stevens (1826-1897) was from a Pennsylvania family that became Ohio pioneers.
His mother, Louisa Landess (1825-1918), was born and raised in Ohio by Palatinate Lutheran immigrants to Virginia, and Connecticut Quakers. His siblings include Temperance S., Sarah Ann, Winfield Scott, Levi Landess, Henry McLane, Mary Magdelene, Alford, Armintha, Effie Jane, Ennis and Caroline.
Within five years of his marriage to Harriet, after working a farm in Fayette, Ohio, the family moved on to farm in Lick Creek, Missouri. They lived in a large white clapboard house that his adult children remembered fondly. He died at 78 years of age, six years before Harriet, who stayed on in Lick Creek until her death.
