William was the son of Wesley and Mary Coontz Cole and had siblings Minerva, Misouria, Mahlon, Mary Ellen, Isaac, and Charles. After the death of his first wife, Ellen Johnson whom he married on 11 August 1871 in Wood County, William married Mary Catherine Johnson Armitage, Ellen's younger sister, on 26 September 1894 in Wood County. They had a daughter, Elsie. William died from apoplexy and arterio-sclerosis at the age of 74 years 9 months and 20 days.
