=============================
In 1861, during the Civil War John Weldy and his son John were killed in front of their home near Monett, Mo.. Gibson (a Northerner) shot them.

NOTE: THE FOLLOWING WAS PROVIDED BY BETTY WELDY FERGUSON

.................. was also told this story about the killing of his father John and little John. The Union soldiers came and John and children came outside, the soldier said he wanted John to leave with them to fight. John told them that his wife had died and he had to stay and take care of his children. Then the soldier shot John and the same bullet hit little John who was standing in front of John.

Comment: As concerns location of John's second wife, sister of his first. He is quoted as saying that his wife had just died. The were married August 1859 and she was with the household during the 1860 Fed. Census, dated 6/14/1860, so if she is now deceased it happened between 6/15/1860-1861 sometime before John Weldy was shot down. Adam Jerden is working on his brother Jame's farm at age 15 in the 1870 Fed. Census. Margaret, John's youngest went to live with her sister Susan Ella (Weldy) Benbrook and her family.
