BOISE, Idaho -- Marvin Rau, 89, of Boise, Idaho, died of natural causes on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003. Cremation will be handled by the Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. on Dec. 6, 2003, at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 3100 South Five Mile Road, Boise, Idaho, with Pastor James Grunow presiding. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Brainerd, Minn., at a later date.
Marvin was born Feb. 18, 1914, to William and Margaret Rau of Maple Grove Township in Minnesota. He attended grade school there in a one-room country school house and then high school in Brainerd. In 1935 he married Doris Gross. Two years later they left the farm and moved into Brainerd. Marv's love of people led him to a career in sales for many years. In 1958, he started a small fast food drive-in restaurant known as Rau's Dairy Way in Brainerd. In 1965, he was elected to the Brainerd City Council. He served as president of the council until 1972 when he was appointed to fill a vacancy on the board of Crow Wing County Commissioners. He went on to serve two four-year terms, and as chairman from 1975 through 1979. During this time he also served on the Crow Wing County Welfare Board, the Northern Pines Mental Health Board, and the Tri County Community Action Program Board. Marv received the Citation of Honor in 1976 from Minnesota Governor Wendall R. Anderson. Marv was an honest public servant with an open mind and heart who enjoyed friends and supporters of various political persuasions. Marvin retired from political office in January of 1981. While living in Brainerd, Marvin and his family were members of Trinity Lutheran Church. In 1983 Marv and Doris sold their home and moved to Boise, Idaho, to be near their children and to see their grandchildren grow up. While in Boise, they made many close friends through their church, the Happy Hoofers and the Optimist Club. Early in his life he was an avid hunter and fisherman and throughout his life he competent in horseshoes, card playing and much to Doris' chagrin he became a devoted wrestling fan in his retirement.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and one sister as well as his daughter, Sharon.
He is survived by his wife, Doris; two sons, Bill Rau and wife Amy of Beaverton, Ore., and Ron Rau and wife, Wanda of Forest Grove, Ore.; two daughters, Cheryl Tallant and husband Greg, of Boise, Idaho, and Kim Cox and husband Joe of Evanston, Wyo.; and former daughter-in-law, Marcia Rau of Oregon. His grandchildren include grandsons Murray Rau and Jason Rau of Oregon, and granddaughters Ivey and Devon Tallant of Boise, Idaho, Katie Tallant of California, Kyla Gifford and Alyssa Cox of Wyoming, Nancy Kemper and Katrinka Rau of Oregon. He has one great grandson, Keegan of Forest Grove.
The family wishes to thank the staffs at Hillcrest Retirement and Assisted Living, Life Care Center of Boise, Hillcrest Rehabilitation and Care Center, St. Luke's Hospital, Four Rivers Hospice Care, as well as Dr. Lyons and Dr. Weitemier.
