Stephen Hopkins
Birth: Apr., 1578
Upper Clatford
Hampshire, England
Death: Jun., 1644
Plymouth
Plymouth County
Massachusetts, USA

Colonial Pilgrim. A Mayflower passenger who was on board the "Sea Venture", which was shipwrecked in Bermuda in 1609. She came over with her father, brother Giles, stepmother and stepbrothers Darius and Oceanus Hopkins on the Mayflower and is listed in her fathers will. The "Sea Venture" was part of a fleet of 9 ships scattered by a hurricane, but some of the ships still made their way to Jamestown. The "Sea Venture", however, was wrecked off Bermuda. Stephen Hopkins was the force behind a mutiny that thought the authority of the Governor ceased when the ship was wrecked. He was sentenced to death, but pardoned. He spent only two years at Jamestown. He had positions of responsibility at Plymouth and he and Edward Winslow were chosen to approach local Indian Tribes as emissaries for the colony. He nevertheless ran afoul of the law several times, for assault, for not properly regulating other people's alcohol intake, and for overpricing. He died between 6 June 1644, when his will was made, and 17 July 1644, when the inventory of his estate was taken.
