Seneca Castle, N. Y. - Mr. Otis Whitney, the oldest of our old citizens, aged ninety eight years, has been for some days very sick with pneumonia, and is not expected to recover. He is one of a family of eight, five sons and three daughters. The daughters all died many years ago. Of the sons the eldest, Luther Whitney, died a few years since on the farm now occupied by Cyrus Bray, and where the whole of his mature life was spent, aged ninety six. The next of the five brothers is Otis, now ninety eight, Nathan is next, living in Illinois, aged ninety four. The next in order was Jonathan, who died a few years since in Albion, in this State, aged eighty five or over, and the last is Chauncey, who lives here, aged ninety. The family furnishes an instance of longevity seldom equaled. Mr. Whitney's father came here from Massachusetts in the latter part of the last century, bringing some of his children with him, among whom was Otis. He purchased a large farm here living on the ground where Sydney Whitney lives. It extended from Mr. Ebenezer Burt's east line to the west line of lands purchased by his brother Joel, who lived where his grandson, William Whitney, now lives, and extending from Mr. Oliver Childs's north line to the south line of the farm now owned by Otis Whitney, comprising at present seven or eight farms, owned mostly by his grandchildren. Mr. Otis Whitney has been from his childhood identified with the history of this community. He had a calm, even disposition, and was possessed of strong common sense. His natural turn of mind was of a decidedly religious character, and he has been identified with the interests of the Presbyterian church here, and has been a ruling elder in the church from its first organization, or very soon thereafter. Perhaps no man living here at present has exerted a wider or more beneficent influence than has Mr. Whitney, and though for many years past laid by from the activities of the community, he has never lost his interest in the welfare of the church and society.
