"Child killed at Christmas Fete
Newtown Boy Hit by Truck as He Was About to Enter Church
Run down by a truck last night, Earl Binkley, 8 years old, of the Richboro Road, near Newtown, Pa., died while being removed to Mercer Hospital here. His skull was fractured.
The little victim was about to enter the Newtown Baptist Church to attend a Christmas entertainment when he was fatally hurt. He climbed from the truck of his uncle, George Binkley, who had picked up numerous children on the outskirts of Newtown to take them to the church, and a minute of so later was struck by a truck driven by Israel Meltzer , of the Dolington Road, Newtown. Metzler took the child to the office of Dr. E.C. Deubler, who ordered his removal to the hospital.
Coroner Davenport was called to the hospital when the boy arrived there dead. He notified County Physician Mitchell. The body was later take to Newtown by Undertaker Stacy Brown.
The child was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter F. Binkley, who live on the Indian Rock Poultry Farm, owned by Dr. Deubler.
After the tragedy Meltzer was arrested by the Langhorne State Highway Patrol on a technical charge of manslaughter. He was released on his own recognizance for a hearing at a later date."
