The Learneds were members of the First Parish (Unitarian) in Watertown. Established in July 28, 1630, only The First Church in Salem was older. It was the first church which adopted thorough Congregationalism and entire independency of other churches and human authority as its basis. First Church was also notable for its pastor, Rev. George Phillips, was the earliest asserter, in colonial affairs, of the doctrine that "taxation without representation is tyranny,"
Rev. Converse [various, Convers] Francis, D. D., was ordained pastor of the First Church and parish in Watertown, June 23, 1819. During that first year he married Daniel Learned and Lucy Livermore. After twenty-three years pastorate, he resigned June 21, 1842, in order to accept the important professorship of Pulpit Eloquence and Pastoral Care, in the Divinity School of Harvard University. His farewell discourse was preached Aug. 21, 1842. The church then experienced a rapid turn-over in clergy, with four clerics assuming the pulpit in 18 years. Rev. Arthur B. Fuller, formerly pastor of the New North Church, Boston, became pastor of the First Parish on March 1, 1860. Among the members listed for 1861 were Daniel Learned, Daniel F. Learned, Mrs. Lucy Learned, Miss Lucy A. Learned, Miss Helen A. Learned and Miss Mary Elizabeth Learned and Mrs. Eleanor Learned. Helen Augusta is not mentioned.
