Buford was born in Pollard, Oklahoma, but lived most of his life on the east side of Des Moines. He was a World War II veteran of the United States Navy and moved to Des Moines shortly after being discharged from his service in the Navy. He married Nettie Sue Smith on November 26, 1938 in Des Moines. In 1948 Buford became employed by the United States Postal Service, and carried mail until his retirement. He was a 50 year member of local 352, National Association Letter Carriers Union. Buford was a member of the Church of Christ for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Nettie of Storm Lake; one son, Tom and wife Jane of Storm Lake; two grandsons, Sean McClinton of Mankato, MN and Shane (Michaelyn) McClinton of West Des Moines; and one granddaughter, Shannon (Brian) Shearer of Denver, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents Alma and Marvin McClinton.
