John Lawrence Schriner, son of Charlie and Mary (Tigen) Schriner, was born October 14, 1912 in Riverton, Nebraska. He departed this earth Sunday, October 7, 2001 at the age of 88 years at the Harlan County Hospital in Alma.
Growing up in Riverton as a young man, Lawrence had a passion for playing baseball for the local Riverton Baseball team. He had a love of family and outdoors. His favorite passions were Nebraska football games, local baseball and soft ballgames, hunting and fishing. His favorite passion of all was training his young dogs to hunt birds. For several years Lawrence worked as a truck driver.
On July 3, 1942, Lawrence married Myrna Hartsook in Smith Center, Kansas. The couple moved to Lincoln, where Lawrence worked at Missile Chevrolet as an auto mechanic. Lawrence was known to many as "Pappy Schriner" and "The Lame Duck."
Upon retirement, Lawrence and Myrna moved back to Riverton in 1983. Myrna preceded him in death in December 1986. After Myrna's death, Lawrence continued to live in Riverton at the family home.
June 3, 1989, he married Helen (Young) Rodenbaugh of Franklin at the Harlan County Reservoir near Republican City. Lawrence and Helen made their home in Riverton, where they remained until illness caused them to move to the Colonial Villa Good Samaritan Center in Alma.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his first wife, Myrna; his parents, Charlie and Mary Schriner, four brothers and one sister.
He leaves to mourn his death his wife, Helen of Alma; three stepdaughters, Darlene Harper of Alma; Karlene and husband. Lloyd Beach of Doniiphan; Marlene and husband, Rodger Wiles of Hunter, Kansas; two stepsons Roy and wife, Wanda Rodenbaugh of Loomis; Bobby Rodenbaugh of Hastings; several step grandchildren, one sister in-law, Iva Nybury of Franklin; a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at Hutchings Funeral Home in Franklin Wednesday, October 19, 2001 with Pastor Neil Kloppenborg officiating. Burial was in the Riverton Cemetery.
Organist was Delores Ziegler with special music provided by Joelen Schafer and Carol Shannon.
Casket bearers were Rex Rodenbaugh, Reve Rodenbaugh, Ryan Rodenbaugh, Troy Wiles, Todd Wiles, and Karl Hansen.
Honorary casket bearers were Pat Donovan, Mark Cummingham and Eric Barp.
Memorials may be made to the Rebekah Lodge in Franklin or the Colonial villa Good Samaritan Center in Alma.
Hutchings Funeral home was in charge of arrangements.
