Long-time Wagoner resident Juanita Irene Smith died peacefully in Oklahoma City on March 25, 2011 surrounded by loving family. She was born March 23, 1922, the first of seven children, to Roy and Mona (Pokey) Wassom in Wagoner County. In 1939 she graduated from Chilocco Indian Boarding School where her favorite classes were cooking and tap dancing. After graduation she married Doyle Smith and had two daughters to whom she was Christian-Love personified. She enjoyed a happy life of 89 years because of the joy she received in giving, loving and sharing her kindness and generosity with others. She is fondly remembered by many for the sensitive and loving care that she gave to patients during her twenty-seven years as a nurse's aide at Wagoner Hospital. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she especially enjoyed the close fellowship of her senior Sunday school class. At church, she was probably best known for her sweet, though shy, personality and her coconut pies—one of which was sold at a church auction for $105.00. Her loving kindness was not reserved for humans, but all God's creatures were precious to her. She fed and cared for all that came her way in need of food or doctoring—though she did take a broom to skunks eating up her cat food. She was also an excellent seamstress and cook. She was a charter member of the Red Hat Club at Yorkshire Village where she enjoyed living for twelve years before moving to Oklahoma City. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her sister Lillian DeMonte. She is survived by her two daughters, Donna Merry and husband Bob of Oklahoma City, and Joanie Liles and husband Richard of Colorado Springs. Her grandchildren are Trisha Boss and husband Ron of Oklahoma City, Jason Liles and wife Lisa, and Patrick Liles and wife Niki all of Colorado Springs. In addition she has six great-grandchildren: Ryan and Austin Boss and Gabrielle, Chloe, Patrick, and Collin Liles. Surviving siblings are Clyde Harabedian of Los Angeles, Robert Wassom and wife Wanda of Wagoner, Norma Vivion and husband Wayne, Barbara Williams and husband Jim, and Joann (Torchy) Wyrrick all of Tulsa. In addition she has countless nieces and nephews as well as grands and greats. The family appreciates the tender care she received from Heartland Hospice and Manor Care Nursing Home in Oklahoma City during her last few weeks of life. Services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Wagoner with Reverends Richard Liles and Shannon Davis. Services are under the direction of Shipman Funeral Home & Crematory, Wagoner, OK.
