Peter Maring was a son of Andrew and Mary Maring,, born 1783 in Sussex County, New Jersey. He was an Ohio pioneer and War of 1812 veteran. Peter Maring married Anna "Nancy" Finch on 22 September 1814 in Belmont County, Ohio, where their first two children were born. He and his family moved in 1817 to Richland County, Ohio, and he entered land in the county's Blooming Grove Township. His sons' biographies and other sources give an account of his life.

"Peter Maring, the father of our subject [Jesse Maring], was born in New Jersey, in 1783, and spent the first twelve years of his life under the parental roof, during which time he did not learn a word of English, as the German language was used in his home. About that time his father died and the home was broken up. Peter Maring was then bound out to a family in New Jersey by the name of Smith and remained with them until he attained early manhood. He then emigrated to Ohio, locating in Belmont county, where he learned the blacksmith's trade. He there married Anna Finch, who was born in New Jersey, in 1787, and was a daughter of Jesse Finch, one of the heroes of the Revolutionary war, who emigrated to Belmont county, Ohio, casting in his lot with its early settlers, and there he spent his remaining days. Mr. and Mrs. Maring began their domestic life in Belmont county, but after the birth of two of their children they removed to Richland county [Ohio] in 1817, the father [Peter Maring] having previously entered from the government one hundred and sixty acres of land in Blooming Grove township...After a time he sold eighty acres of his farm, but continued to reside upon the remaining eighty until the time of his death, which occurred in August, 1863...The father [Peter Maring] was a veteran of the war of 1812, loyally serving his country during the second period of hostilities between the United States and the mother country. He was an active worker, a consistent member and a faithful officer of the Methodist Episcopal church for many years. He strongly opposed slavery in ante-bellum days, and in early life gave his political support to the Whig party; but on the organization of the Republican party, which was formed to prevent the further extension of slavery, he joined its ranks. His wife died in 1875, in her eighty-eighth year [sic]. They were people of the highest respectability and held in warm regard for their many excellencies of character." (Bio. of Jesse Maring in: A Centennial Biographical History of Richland County, Ohio, Abraham J. Baughman, ed. (Chicago: The Lewis Publishing Co., 1901), p. 211-12.)

"Peter Maring, Sr., who came to this [Richland] county (southern part) in 1817, and came to this [Blooming Grove] township in 1818...[He] died Aug. 5, 1862, aged nearly 79 years. He was born in New Jersey...Anna Finch, who was also born in New Jersey; she died Aug. 1, 1871, aged over 80 years." (Bio. of Peter Maring, Jr., in: History of Richland County, Ohio (Mansfield, Ohio: A. A. Graham, 1880), p. 757.)

"Peter Maring, son of Andrew and Mary Maring, was born in Sussex County, New Jersey, in 1784. He left home when a child and lived with Peter Smith, near Halsey, N. J., who also removed to Belmont County, Ohio. He married Anna Finch, of Belmont County, Ohio, in 1818 [sic]; moved to a farm (now owed by Sherman H. Maring, a grandson) near Shiloh, Ohio, formerly Salem. He died there in 1862. PETER was a soldier in the War of 1812. His wife, Anna, died 1872. She was a daughter of Jesse Finch, a soldier in the Revolutionary War. To them were born the following: I. Hannah, II. Mary, III. Fanny, IV. Jesse, V. Johh, VI. Peter." (Warren Mering, The "Mering" Family (Sussex, New Jersey: Wantage Recorder Press, 1929), p. 9.

Blooming Grove Township, Richland County, Ohio: "The first road in the township was cut by the army of Gen. [Reasin] Beall, in the summer of 1812. It entered the township at Shenandoah, passing northwest, through the present site of Rome, and continuing on toward Shiloh, in Cass Township. It is now a much traveled highway. It was along this road that the larger part of the early settlers entered the township. Many of these early settlers accompanied the army of Beall, and thus saw for the first time beauties and advantages of their future home. Among these were George Hackett and Peter Maring; the former in the capacity of scout and guide, and the latter as a pioneer, assisting to cut the road. Some of the first settlers entered their land as early as 1813 and 1814, but no actual settlement was made, so far as known, until 1814." The township's first settlers followed Beall's trail. Peter Maring entered section 7 in 1817. (History of Richland County, Ohio (Mansfield, Ohio: A. A. Graham, 1880), pp. 393-94.)
