Inscription
Hebrew (portion visible in photo):
…dear…reb(Mr.) Shmuel, son of reb(Mr.) Avraham. He died (on) day 2 (i.e., Sunday after sunset to Monday prior to sunset), 8 Sh'vat (in the) year (5)6(17)* (1 Feb 1857*), according to the abbreviated date. May his soul be bound up in the bond of everlasting life.
*Note: the tens and one digits of the inscribed Hebrew year are indistinct (i.e., the year is 56xx) but the Hebrew year can be inferred to be 5617 from the the Hebrew day & month (8 Sh'vat) and day of the week (day 2, corresponding to either Sunday after sunset or Monday prior to sunset) together with the secular death day and month (i.e., 1 Feb.) These data uniquely point to Samuel's death occurring on Sunday after sunset on Feb 1, 1857.
