John Jarrette was born in Kentucky. He married Mary Josephine Younger may 8, 1860. She was the sister of Cole Younger. Before the War Between the States, John worked as a carpenter. During the war, he was the Captain of Company E of the Jackson County Regiment of Gen. Jo Shelby's Iron Brigade until January 21, 1863 when he and 1st Lt. George W. Shepherd resigned and went home and afterwards rode with Captain William Quantrill. It is said that after the war he rode with the James-Younger Gang. Their children were Jeptha b, 1862 and Margaret b. 1864.
