Roman S. Grabitz, 83 years, of Monroe, MI passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at Mercy Memorial Hospital. Roman had been in declining health since October of 2009.

Born August 9, 1927 in New Boston, MI, Roman was the son of the late John and Mary (Hojnowski) Grabitz.

Roman served his country honorably and proudly during WWII as a Private in the US Army. Roman served from January of 1946 to July of 1947. He was stationed overseas in Korea.

On March 21, 1964 Roman married his beloved wife the former Elgie Drummonds in Monroe.

Roman was employed by Ford Motor Company for 37½. He began his career in Flat Rock and transferred to the Monroe Plant where he worked until his retirement in 1983.

Roman was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed camping and traveling. Roman's favorite hobby was woodworking where he had a passion for repairing and restoring antique furniture.

Roman is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years Elgie, 2 loving children; Johnnie R. (Shari) Patterson Sr. of Monroe and Mary Ann (Joel) Schultz of Dundee, MI, 4 cherished grandchildren; Johnnie R. Patterson Jr., Lauren Patterson, Timothy Daniel Stamper Sr. and Nesha Schultz, 1 treasured great grandson Timothy Daniel Stamper Jr., and 1 sister Irene May of New Boston, MI. In addition to his parents, Roman was preceded in death by 2 brothers; Paul E. and Alex, and 2 sisters; Helen Ruby and Ann Marton.

Visitation will be held on Saturday from 1-8 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd. in Monroe where funeral services celebrating Roman's life will be held on Sunday, March 27, 2011 at 2:00 PM. The Rev. Roy Southerland pastor of Monroe Missionary Baptist Church will officiate. Private family interment will be held at St. Joseph Cemetery in Monroe.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the VFW Post 1138 in Monroe.
