Astley Cooper Ancona was one of several sons born to Moses Morris Montefiore Ancona and his wife Mary Ann nee Knapp. Not long after he was born the family moved back to Berks County PA to a house in Alsace township. His father was a physician and Astley was named for a famous English surgeon Sir Astley Paston Cooper. By the time he was 14 years old he was working odd jobs. He eventually got a job on the railroad and for much of his life in various positions including machinist and engineer. He traveled a lot in his early life but once he married he settled in Evansville Indiana. He is credited with at least 3 patents for inventions he developed during his time working for the railroad.
