Leon was the the oldest son of Ollen Simkins and Ethel (Brimmer) Simkins. He grew up on a farm in rural Williamsfield, IL. He married Betrice Wells Bainbridge, a young widow with young sons. Together Leon and Bea raised her sons and their own children in the small town of Knoxville, Illinois. He was very proud of his step-son William Bainbridge, who had a distinguished career in the U.S. Army. WIlliam retired as the 5th Sergeant Major of the Army in 1979.
