Enlisted (date not listed) at Culpeper Court House, VA., he was mustered into Captain McMullen's Company, 4th Virginia Regiment Heavy Artillery, as a Sergeant. (This Company subsequently became Company D, 34th Virginia Infantry on 3/8/1864.)
Hospitalized for typhoid fever 4/25/1862 in Chimborazo Hospital #4, Richmond, VA.; transferred 5/29/1862 to C.S.A. Hospital, Charlotesville, VA.
Elected Junior 2nd Lieutenant 12/22/1862.
Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant 3/3/1863.
On furlough 12/26/1864.
Was surrendered and paroled 4/9/1865 at Appomattox, VA.

The 34th Infantry Regiment was organized in May, 1862, with men from Norfolk, Richmond, and Yorktown, and the counties of Gloucester, Mecklenburg, Bedford, Greene, and King and Queen. For almost two years the unit served as heavy artillery attached to the Department of Richmond and was known as the 4th Heavy Artillery. In May, 1864, it was assigned to Wise's Brigade as infantry.
