Herbert Weeks Byrum, age 88 years, 11 months and 16 days, passed away on September 1, 1990 at the Golden Valley Memorial Hospital in Clinton Missouri. He was a resident at Clinton Manor Apartments, 1717 Gaines Drive.
He was born September 17, 1901, in Onida, South Dakota. He was the youngest of six children born to Grace Emma (Brooking) Byrum and Almon Coe Byrum, who were one of the first families to homestead and settle Sully County in the Dakota Territory, around 1884. He attended school in Onida and graduated from Onida High School in 1918.
On September 23, 1938, he was united in marriage to Velma Mary Summers at Gunnison, Colorado. To this union they were blessed with 10 children, three of whom preceded him in death.
In 1941, he came to the Leesville community and bought a farm east of Leesville, where he engaged in farming for many years. He also served the community as a director for the Leesville R-9 School Board and the Leesville Township Road Board. Before the interdiction of modern machinery, he volunteered as a grave digging.
Although he retired from farming in 1966, he still loved to work the land and spent many hours on his farm raising a beautiful garden.
He and Velma moved to town in their later years.
