Civil War Union Soldier. He was enrolled in the 29th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on September 4, 1862, and was mustered in as a Private in Company D on September 20, 1862. He served until the expiration of his enlistment, and was honorably mustered out on June 30, 1863


Edward (sic) T. Layton of Navesink died Saturday morning of paralysis. Mr. Layton was 78 years old and had been sick several years. The burial permit was issued by Coroner Harry C. Fay of Red Bank as no doctor had been in attendance. The funeral was held at the house Monday afternoon in charge of Rev. J. C. Lord. The body was buried at Stone Church cemetery. Mr. Layton leaves five children, Mrs. Arthur Havens and Mrs. Arthur Curtis of Navesink, Mrs. William Boeckel of Locust Point, Mrs. William Howard of Oceanic and George Layton of Atlantic Highlands.
