Mr. John W. "Jack" King, 88, of Smithville, N.J., previously of Mountainside, N.J., and Hillside, N.J., passed away after a brief illness, with his family by his side, on Saturday morning. A viewing was held on Monday, March 21, and on Tuesday, March 22, with funeral services following. Services were at the Wimberg Funeral Home, 211 E. Great Creek Road, Galloway, N.J. 08205. The funeral procession was escorted by officers of the Hillside and Galloway Township Police Departments. Burial with Military Honors provided by the U.S. Navy was at the Atlantic County Veterans' Cemetery.

Jack was born and raised in Hillside. A 1941 graduate of Hillside High School, he served in the United States Navy from 1942 until 1946, stationed in the South Pacific for three years during World War II. Upon returning from the war, Mr. King owned and operated Kilroy's Gas Station and Towing at the corner of Rt. 22 and Bloy Street in Hillside.

In 1954, Mr. King joined the Hillside Police Department and retired in 1980. During his tenure at H.P.D., Jack attained the rank of detective and received numerous awards and commendations.

Upon retiring, Jack was a partner at Jay and Bill's Auto Sales at 24 Hillside Ave., Hillside. Mr. King then went on to start up and run several other successful car lots until retiring in 2000 to the Smithville area.

Mr. King was a lifetime Elks member and a lifetime member of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, as well as a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion.

Jack leaves his devoted wife of 62 years, Rosemary; his son and daughter-in-law, John W. and Christine of Melbourne Beach, Fla.; his daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Thomas Detweiler of Yardley, Pa., and son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Stephanie of Reading, Pa.
