US Congressman. The son of investment banker US Secretary of State and Ambassador to France Robert Bacon, Robert Low Bacon graduated from Harvard University in 1907 and Harvard Law School in 1910. He then worked for a year at the US Treasury Department, afterwards moving to New York, where he became an investment banker. Active in the National Guard, he served on the Texas border during the 1916 punitive expedition against Mexico. Bacon returned to active duty for World War I, serving in France, attaining the rank of Major and receiving the Distinguished Service Medal. Bacon remained in the Army Reserve after the war, eventually rising to the rank of Colonel. Prominent in Republican politics, Bacon was a Delegate to the 1920 Republican National Convention. In 1922 he was the successful Republican nominee for a seat in the US House of Representatives, serving from March 1923 until his death. After the 1932 election of Franklin Roosevelt, Bacon became a leading opponent in Congress of Roosevelt's New Deal. (bio by: Bill McKern)
