Robert W. Backstrom, 81, 4328 English Ave., died Sunday, August 25, 2002, at Saint Vincent Health Center. He was born May 23, 1921, in Ohiopyle, son of the late William and Betty Backstrom.

He was a sergeant with Troop E. of the Pennsylvania State Police at the Lawrence Park barracks for 30 years, retiring in 1973. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, attaining the rank of technician fifth grade. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and the American Association of Retired Troopers.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Olga Denick and Viola Dubensiak.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Alvira Ognibene Backstrom; a daughter, Paula Kurzweil and her husband Alan, of Akron, Ohio; two brothers, Russell Backstrom and his wife, Daryle, and William Backstorm and his wife, Ruth, all of West Newton; a sister, Joanne Pierce of West Newton; and two grandsons.

Friends may call today from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM at the A. Brugger & Sons Funeral Home, Pine Avenue Branch, 8454 E. 38th St. A service will be held Wednesday at 11 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church, 34 E. 38th St., with the Rev. Mark Sallach officiating.

Burial will be at Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.
