P.D. was the son of Thomas Allen Cardwell and Martha Lapsley Read. He married Wilma Bingham and they were the parents of two daughters.

"P. D. Cardwell, 78, of Frankfort, Kentucky, died March 20, 1990 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Lexington. A native of Frankfort, born May 30, 1911, he was the son of the late Thomas Allen and Martha Lapsley Cardwell.
He was currently serving as a deputy with the Franklin County Sheriff's Department, was retired from National Distillers; and was a member of the Bridgeport Christian Church.
Surviving are his wife, Wilma Bingham Cardwell; two daughters, Mrs. David (Lula) Curry and Mrs. James (Patsy) Bates, both of Frankfort; four sisters, Mrs. Susi Lee Kendrick, Mrs. Jane Leathers, Mrs. Sarah Pullian, [sic] and Mrs. Julia Pacey, all of Frankfort; one brother, James Lapsley Cardwell of Frankfort; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Woodford County, Kentucky."
