Cremation rites were accorded. Memorial services were Feb. 14 at Carbondale Assembly of God Church, Tulsa, Okla., with the Rev. Phil Taylor officiating. Eulogy was delivered by his brother Dr. Gene Burd, a professor at the University of Texas, Austin. Arrangements were under the direction of Adams Crest Cremation, Tulsa, Okla.
John Francis Burd was born Jan. 1, 1931, on a farm near Four Mile, the son of Sorono Clemeth and Eula Marie (Gann) Burd. He died Jan. 29, 2011.
He attended Four Mile Grade School and Buffalo High School before moving to Los Angeles, Calif., in 1946, where he attended East Los Angeles Junior College and became a star baseball pitcher in southern California.
He was the retired manager and founder of Sooner Egg Company in Tulsa, Okla., and Henny-Penny Egg Company in Phoenix, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen Choate-Burd; and a brother, Bill Burd.
Survivors include his three sons: Dr. John Daniel Burd, a professor at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Okla., Gayland Burd, Bakersfield, Calif., and Howard Burd, Tulsa, Okla.; a daughter, Kathy Delancy, Sperry, Okla.; two sisters: Diana Looney, Buffalo, and Marilyn Burd, Los Angeles, Calif.; a brother, Dr. Gene Burd, Austin, Texas; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three nieces: Ruth Brown, Buffalo, Candice Vanderpool, Liberty, and Sandra Burd, Mission Woods, Kan.; and one nephew, Michael Looney, Neosho.
Cremated, Location of ashes is unknown.
