Joseph was the son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Wiggin) Smith. He was born in Loudon, New Hampshire and came with his parents to Corinna in 1838 as a small child. He sailed for California to find gold from Belfast, Maine to San Francisco when he was 18 years old. He struck gold in 1856 and remained in California until 1862, after his 3 of his siblings died of consumption that year to help out his parents. He returned and purchased a large parcel of land on Pleasant Street. He was a trustee of Corinna Union Academy.
