Civil War: Battery D, 14th NY Heavy Artillery,
and Company G, 2nd California Infantry

Daniel O'Donnell was the son of Owen O'Donnell (1795-1876) and Margaret (maiden name unknown; 1812). Daniel arrived in the United States about 1856. Daniel enlisted as a private at Shandaken, New York, December 13, 1863, and was mustered into Battery D, 14th New York Heavy Artillery, January 7, 1864. He was listed as a deserter at Sandy Hook, New York, February 15, 1864. He apparently left New York about this same time on a ship bound for San Francisco, California, where he enlisted again under the alias John Cunningham at the Presidio of San Francisco May 30, 1864. He was mustered into Company G, 2nd California Infantry. Private Cunningham (O'Donnell) was mustered out with his company at the Presidio of San Francisco May 10, 1866 (Orton, p. 479). After the war he settled in Minnesota where he married Mary "Mollie" McGuire at Saint Paul on May 9, 1872. He lived for several years at Hawley in Clay County (1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 US Census; 1895, 1905 Minnesota Census). Daniel filed for a Civil War veteran's disability pension at Hawley October 19, 1889, and received application No. 735,021 and certificate No. 1,012,363. Daniel refiled for his veteran's pension at Hawley March 9, 1907. After the death of his wife Mollie, Daniel lived for a time at Fargo, North Dakota (1925 North Dakota Census) before moving to Minneapolis, where he died in 1928.
