The Krouse family came to the United States sometime between between 1840 and 1846, where they settled in New Jersey. Sometime between 1846 and 1860, the Krouse family came west to Illinois, where they settled in Trivoli Township in Peoria County. On August 9, 1862, John Krouse volunteered to serve in a company which was being raised in Trivoli, Illinois by James S, Bean for service in the Union Army. Five days later, on August 14, 1862, Martin Krouse also volunteered
to serve in the Trivoli company. At the time they volunteered, both John and Martin give their place of residence as Trivoli and their place of birth as Baden, Germany. John gives his age as 24, while Martin states he is 23.

On the afternoon of the 14th of August of 1862, James S. Bean led about 90 Trivoli volunteers into Peoria, where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. On August 27, 1862, 83 of those Trivoli volunteers were mustered in as Company D of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. James S. Bean was elected and promoted to Major of the entire regiment, so the men of Co. D elected Frank Hitchcock to be their Captain.
On September 7, 1862, the men of the 85th & 86th Illinois marched out the gates of Camp Lyon, through the streets of Peoria, with much fanfare, and boarded a train bound for Camp Joe Holt, Jeffersonville, Indiana. Four weeks later, the men of the 85th & 86th were in the field in Kentucky as part of Col. Daniel McCook's Brigade, chasing Confederate troops in Kentucky. On Oct. 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those troops in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the 86th Illinois suffering their first casualties. There would be many more in the years to come. After the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the Confederates withdrew from Kentucky and the men of McCook's Brigade marched on to Nashville, Tennessee, where the 86th would go into winter camp.
On July 29, 1864, Private John Krouse was transferred to Co. B of the 1st U.S. Veteran Volunteer Engineer Regiment. He apparently served out the remainder of the war with that unit. He is now believed to have been discharged from the service in June 30, 1865. He then returned to his home in Central Illinois.
John Krouse was married to Lovenia (or Lavenia) Susan Nelson on September 21, 1871 at __________, __________. Lovenia was born on November 21, 1841 in Holmes County, Ohio, the daughter of James Nelson and Susannah (Croco) Nelson. James Nelson was born on November 17, 1809 in Pennsylvania. James was married to Susannah Croco on July 4, 1838. Susannah Croco was born on November 21, 1816 in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. Ten children were born to James and Susannah. They were;

James Nelson died on July 16, 1872 in Corydon, Wayne County, Iowa. His earthly remains were laid to rest on the Corydon Cemetery in Corydon, Iowa.
After his passing, Susannah was married 2nd to __________ Dixon and 3rd to William Anderson. William and Susannah are found residing in Clark County, Washington in 1880.
Susannah died on September 4, 1896 in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon. Her earthly remains were laid to rest in the Lone Fir Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.

The records in the Lone Fir Cemetery office leave some question as to whether Lovenia (or Levinia) Susan (Nelson) Krouse died on either November 24, 1878 or on November 14, 1890 in Clark County, Washington. The cemetery lists a John Krouse buried in the first grave on her mother's lot. This John Krouse is listed as being born on November 21, 1841 and as dying on November 24, 1878. These are the birth and death dates that some believe are for Levinia Susan (Nelson) Krouse. Is it possible that they meant to say, wife of John Krouse, rather than John Krouse. In grave #2 there is a Levinia Krouse listed as having died on November 14, 1890. If Levinia is in grave #1, then who is this in grave #2? But if this is Levinia in grave #2, who is this in grave #1? Lovenia's earthly remains were laid to rest in the Lone Fir Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. However, Levinia's tombstone leaves little doubt as to which dates are correct. Levinia Susan (Nelson) Krouse, the wife of Private John Krouse did die on November 24, 1878, most likely from the complications of child birth. Her stone leaves no doubt of this. So who is in the grave that the cemetery records as Levinia Krouse, who died on November 14, 1890? This is the question we need answered!
After Lovenia's death, the children went to live with their grandparents, William Anderson and Susannah (Croco) Nelson Dixon Anderson. It was Susannah who owned the lot that everyone is buried on in the Lone Fir Cemetery. William Anderson was born on March 25, 1814 in Virginia and was a farmer living in Precinct #1, La Center, Clark County, Washington at the time of the 1880 census. William died on October 11, 1884 and his earthly remains were laid to rest in the Lone Fir Cemetery in Portland, Oregon on Susannah's lot. The children listed in the 1880 census are as follows;

The surviving members of the 86th Illinois were of the belief that Private John Krouse died about 1906/07. His last mailing address was Corydon, Iowa. It is now known that Private John Krouse died on May 20, 1907 at __________, __________. His earthly remains were laid to rest in the Lone Fir Pioneer Cemetery, located at Southeast 21st Avenue and Morrison Street in Portland, Oregon. He is buried in his mother-in-law's lot.

James Nelson died on July 16, 1872 in Corydon, Wayne County, Iowa. His earthly remains were laid to rest on the Corydon Cemetery in Corydon, Iowa.
After his passing, Susannah was married 2nd to __________ Dixon and 3rd to William Anderson. William and Susannah are found residing in Clark County, Washington in 1880.
Susannah died on September 4, 1896 in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon. Her earthly remains were laid to rest in the Lone Fir Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
Four children are known to have been born to John Krouse and Lovenia (or Lavenia) Susan (Nelson) Krouse. They are;

(1860-) and Laura A. (Furry) Funk (1863-19__); Dora died September 18, 1967 in Jackson County, Oregon; Albert is buried in the Missouri Flats Cemetery in Applegate, Jackson County, Oregon.
2. Charles Phillip Krouse, b; 11/18/1875 Clark Co., WA., b; 11/29/1918 Hot Lake, Union Co., OR, buried in the Hillcrest Cemetery in La Grande, Union Co., OR.
3. John Byron Krouse, b; 05/06/1877 Clark Co., WA., d; 09/30/1900 Jackson, MN. buried Corydon Cemetery, Corydon, Wayne Co., IA, the same cemetery where his Grandfather Krouse and his uncle, Martin Krouse, is buried.
4. Esther Lovenia "Daisy" Krouse, born November 8, 1878 in Clark County, Washington; married to __________ Horan on __________ __, 18__ at __________, Washington; died on January 11, 1959 in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon; buried in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon.
The records in the Lone Fir Cemetery office leave some question as to whether Lovenia (or Levinia) Susan (Nelson) Krouse died on either November 24, 1878 or on November 14, 1890 in Clark County, Washington. The cemetery lists a John Krouse buried in the first grave on her mother's lot. This John Krouse is listed as being born on November 21, 1841 and as dying on November 24, 1878. These are the birth and death dates that some believe are for Levinia Susan (Nelson) Krouse. Is it possible that they meant to say, wife of John Krouse, rather than John Krouse. In grave #2 there is a Levinia Krouse listed as having died on November 14, 1890. If Levinia is in grave #1, then who is this in grave #2? But if this is Levinia in grave #2, who is this in grave #1? Lovenia's earthly remains were laid to rest in the Lone Fir Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. However, Levinia's tombstone leaves little doubt as to which dates are correct. Levinia Susan (Nelson) Krouse, the wife of Private John Krouse did die on November 24, 1878, most likely from the complications of child birth. Her stone leaves no doubt of this. So who is in the grave that the cemetery records as Levinia Krouse, who died on November 14, 1890? This is the question we need answered!
After Lovenia's death, the children went to live with their grandparents, William Anderson and Susannah (Croco) Nelson Dixon Anderson. It was Susannah who owned the lot that everyone is buried on in the Lone Fir Cemetery. William Anderson was born on March 25, 1814 in Virginia and was a farmer living in Precinct #1, La Center, Clark County, Washington at the time of the 1880 census. William died on October 11, 1884 and his earthly remains were laid to rest in the Lone Fir Cemetery in Portland, Oregon on Susannah's lot. The children listed in the 1880 census are as follows;

John Crouse is listed as being 39 years of age, as being born in Ohio, is listed as a Lumberman and his parents are listed as being born in PA. Is this our John Krouse?
The surviving members of the 86th Illinois were of the belief that Private John Krouse died about 1906/07. His last mailing address was Corydon, Iowa. It is now known that Private John Krouse died on May 20, 1907 at __________, __________. His earthly remains were laid to rest in the Lone Fir Pioneer Cemetery, located at Southeast 21st Avenue and Morrison Street in Portland, Oregon. He is buried in his mother-in-law's lot.

John Krouse was born on January 1, 1839/38 at Baden, Germany, one of three sons known to have been born to Philip Krouse and Anna (Tuhl) Krouse. The other sons were Martin and Theodore. The Krouse family came to the United States sometime between between 1840 and 1846, where they settled in New Jersey. Sometime between 1846 and 1860, the Krouse family came west to Illinois, where they settled in Trivoli Township in Peoria County. At the time of the 1860 census of Peoria County, the Krouse family, minus John, is found in Trivoli Township;

On August 9, 1862, John Krouse volunteered to serve in a company which was being raised in Trivoli, Illinois by James S, Bean for service in the Union Army. Five days later, on August 14, 1862, Martin Krouse also volunteered
to serve in the Trivoli company. At the time they volunteered, both John and Martin give their place of residence as Trivoli and their place of birth as Baden, Germany. John gives his age as 24, while Martin states he is 23.

Remarks TRANS TO VETERAN ENGINEER CORPS JUL 29, 1864
On the afternoon of the 14th of August of 1862, James S. Bean led about 90 Trivoli volunteers into Peoria, where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. On August 27, 1862, 83 of those Trivoli volunteers were mustered in as Company D of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. James S. Bean was elected and promoted to Major of the entire regiment, so the men of Co. D elected Frank Hitchcock to be their Captain.
On September 7, 1862, the men of the 85th & 86th Illinois marched out the gates of Camp Lyon, through the streets of Peoria, with much fanfare, and boarded a train bound for Camp Joe Holt, Jeffersonville, Indiana. Four weeks later, the men of the 85th & 86th were in the field in Kentucky as part of Col. Daniel McCook's Brigade, chasing Confederate troops in Kentucky. On Oct. 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those troops in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the 86th Illinois suffering their first casualties. There would be many more in the years to come. After the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the Confederates withdrew from Kentucky and the men of McCook's Brigade marched on to Nashville, Tennessee, where the 86th would go into winter camp.
On July 29, 1864, Private John Krouse was transferred to Co. B of the 1st U.S. Veteran Volunteer Engineer Regiment. He apparently served out the remainder of the war with that unit. He is now believed to have been discharged from the service in June 30, 1865. He then returned to his home in Central Illinois.

Lovenia was born on November 21, 1841 in Holmes County, Ohio, the daughter of James Nelson and Susannah (Croco) Nelson. James Nelson was born on November 17, 1809 in Pennsylvania. James was married to Susannah Croco on July 4, 1838. Susannah Croco was born on November 21, 1816 in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. Ten children were born to James and Susannah. They were;
