| Birth: | Jan. 31, 1914 | | Death: | Feb. 2, 1981 | US Congressman. A World War II United States Army veteran, he was elected as a Democrat to represent New Jersey's 11th District in the United States House of Representatives, in 1948, defeating incumbent Republican Congressman Frank Sundstrom for the seat. He served from 1949 until 1962, when he resigned to run for Mayor of Newark, New Jersey. Elected to that office, he served as the Mayor of Newark from 1962 until he was defeated by Kenneth Gibson for re-election in 1970. During his time in office the city of Newark suffered through the riots in 1967, and subsequent investigations into the riots revealed corruption in the Addonizio administration. Hugh J. Addonizio was later convicted of taking kickbacks during his mayoral tenure. Sentenced to 10 years in prison, he served 5 before being released in 1979. (bio by: K)
