William Darrick Fremont, a former local restaurateur passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at his home after a two-year battle with melanoma, a particularly aggressive form of cancer.
Bill was born in Berlin on July 12, 1920 to Felix and Magda Freund, German Jews.
At fifteen, he apprenticed at Berlin's renowned Adlon Hotel. Two years later, in 1937, his parents sent him to relatives in Argentina. Bill fell in love with the United States as a teenager in Berlin watching American musicals such as "The Broadway Melody of 1929." He arrived in Manhattan in November 1947.
Bill worked in various hotels and restaurants across the country, including the Waldorf Astoria of New York, the Shamrock in Houston, Hawaii's Royal Hawaiian and the Biltmore in Santa Barbara where he was the catering manager. In 1958 with, Inez, his first wife, he opened The Matador, an extremely popular Spanish restaurant in West Los Angeles. In 1972, he sold The Matador to Collins Foods.
Bill Fremont was President of the Bay Area Restaurant and Hotel Association (1968-1969) and the Santa Monica Lion's Club (1974-1975). He belonged to the Simon Wiesenthal Center, American Institute of Wine and Food, Knights of the Vine, and the Riviera Masonic Lodge. Travel, music, good food and wine, reading, and politics were his greatest loves.
Once he retired, Bill and Eva. his second wife, explored the world, from the Swiss chalet they often rented to Bariloche, Argentina, from Papua New Guinea to Shanghai, and from Botswana to Baden-Baden.
Bill is survived by Eva, his wife of thirty-three years; daughter Suzanne Bethurum; son-in-law Daniel Bethurum; grandsons Hudson Fremont and Harrison Chittenden and wife Ashleigh; great-grandchildren Kayden and Rylie Chittenden; and Bill's sister-in-law, Eugenie Beeler.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 20, 2011 at Hillside Memorial Park & Mortuary, 6001 West Centinela Avenue, Culver City.
