Grace Ima Shaffer of Grand Island, NE died February 9, 2011 at Saint Francis Hospital in Grand Island. Grace was born January 7, 1920 in Sioux City, IA to James and Edna (Lewis) Red. She graduated from City High, High School in 1937, and went on to receive her BA in English and Business Administration from the University of Iowa.
Grace was united in marriage April 4, 1955 with Mervin "Dutch" Shaffer of Windham, Iowa, where they made their home until moving to Grand Island in 1969. Grace worked as a legal secretary in Iowa City, IA and then for the law firm Payne and Payne in Grand Island retiring in 1985. Grace was a member of the Legal Secretaries Association in Grand Island for many years. She enjoyed planting a large garden each year and sharing her produce with everyone! She also enjoyed lively conversations on current events and stories of her Greek heritage of which she was very proud.
Grace is survived by four daughters, Helen Kudos (Bob Caldwell) of West Branch, IA, Mary Shaffer of Bushton, KS, Kathy Shaffer of Seale, AL, and Jean (Joe) Whyte of North Platte, NE, a sister Mary (Ralph) Beard of Milk River, Alberta, Canada and grandchildren, Iris and Joe Caldwell, Chuck and Kellie Whyte, Lukas Sidzyik and Jamie Lynn; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Mervin, and two brothers James (Rhedi) and John Red.
A private gathering with family will be at a later date. Her family will gather to celebrate her life at a later date. Apfel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
