FLORENCE LYDIA BRASE LEBEN
3 Sep 1910 ~ 30 Oct 1996

Florence Lydia Brase Leben of Holyoke was born September 3, 1910 in Ruskin, Nebraska the fourth of five children of Ernst [F.J.] and Lydia Rodenburg Brase. She departed this life on October 30, 1996 at Prairie Vista Care Center in Holyoke at the age of 86.

Florence was baptized September 18, 1910 at the Lutheran Church in Ruskin. The Brase family moved to Amherst in 1923. She was confirmed on May 19, 1924 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Amherst.

As a young woman, Florence worked for several families in the area, taking care of their homes and families.

On September 12, 1928 she was united in marriage to Herman Leben at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Amherst. To this union four children were born: Lois, Gordon, Kenneth and Karen. Two of the children, Lois and Kenneth, died in infancy. Herman and Florence were married for 68 years.

In 1960 Florence and Herman moved to Holyoke to live, but they continued to farm in the Amherst area. In 1992 Florence entered Prairie Vista Care Center because of physical disabilities that required special care.

Throughout the years, Florence could be found at school events watching the children play sports and perform in plays and musicals. In the summer, her car was usually parked at the ball field where she would spend the day watching ball games from the peewees to adults.

When Florence could no longer attend events, she enjoyed being kept informed on local happenings by the staff at Prairie Vista. Herman and Florence attended the University of Colorado Buffalo footballs games for 15 years and missed only a couple in all that time.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Holyoke where she was active in the Ladies Aid and Women of Zion. She also served many years as a Vacation Bible School teacher. She supported the Good Shepherd Home of the West for many years.

Preceding her in death were two children, her parents, and brothers Clarence and Arnold Brase.

Survivors include husband Herman of Holyoke; children Gordon Leben and wife Winona of Amherst and Karen Stone and husband Dale of Evans; grandchildren Les Leben of Littleton, Bob and Megan Leben of Boulder, Nunzy and Bruce Alves of New Braunfels, Texas, Kevin and Dawn Leben of Mesa, Arizona, Joe Stoner of San Francisco, California and Kay and Kevin Riley of Boulder; six great grandchildren; sisters Esther Sagehorn and Gladys Willmon of Holyoke; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were held Saturday, November 2, 1996 at Zion Lutheran Church in Holyoke with Rev. Gary Rahe officiating. Interment was made at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Amherst.
