Samuel was the son of Israel and Abigail (Kilham) Herrick. He had a twin brother named Eli. Samuel married Abigail House on June 14, 1789 in Turner, Maine. They had five children from 1791 to 1801.

In 1801 Eli bought land in Leeds from Isaac Freeman. A year later Samuel's family settled on that lot. That land remained in the Herrick family for at least 100 years. The farm was located off Fish Street, on what had been known as Herrick's Lane, a road that no longer exists. That farm remained in the family for four generations, until it was destroyed by fire in the 1920s.

Samuel's son Eli, who was born in 1793, died a prisoner of war in Quebec in 1814.
