Virginia B. Layfield
SALISBURY — Virginia B. Layfield died Thursday, March 10, 2011. She was born Nov. 18, 1918, to Clark Ross Banes and Mary Ellen Harvey Banes.
She was raised in Baltimore County and City. With her marriage to Banes Layfield in 1935, she moved to the Eastern Shore.
She was a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Nursing and also held a Bachelor of Science degree in business from Johns Hopkins University and an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
She had a remarkable 43-year career at Peninsula Regional Medical Center. From 1948 until 1991, she occupied 11 supervisory or administrative positions and retired three times as its president.
Virginia received numerous gubernatorial appointments to serve on Maryland state health care boards and health care committees. They include the Advisory Board on Hospital Licensing for the Maryland State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the Task Force on Nursing Issues, plus the Health Services Cost Review Commission and the Maryland Hospital Association's Task Force on Tort Reform.
Her awards include the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year award and the Maryland Hospital Association's Distinguished Service award. She also received the Frank H. Morris Humanitarian Award and the Tri-County Boy Scouts Distinguished Citizen award.
She was a member of Antioch United Methodist Church in Princess Anne. She also was a volunteer for the Village of Hope, the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore, the Mallard Landing Retirement Community, the Magi Fund and the Helen Sue Ward Foundation for Scholarships. She was past president of the Soroptimist Club of Salisbury.
Peninsula Regional Medical Center honored her in 2008 by naming its new patient care tower The Layfield Tower. The directors and executive staff unanimously voted to have their collective funds earmarked for this naming opportunity in her honor, which culminated her remarkable career at PRMC.
She leaves a loving legacy in her son, Philip, and her daughter-in-love, Nancy, in addition to her grandchildren, Loren and his wife, Arlene, Lisa and her husband, Lee, and Todd and his wife, Peggy; plus her two adored great-grandchildren, Philip and Lily.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at noon at Antioch United Methodist Church in Princess Anne. Friends may call Monday from 6-9 p.m. at Hinman Funeral Home in Princess Anne and Tuesday from 10:30 a.m.-noon at the church. Interment will be in Beechwood Cemetery in Princess Anne.
