He served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 136th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, a nine-month enlistment regiment, having been commissioned in July 1862. He led his command in the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign and in the May 1864 Chancellorsville Campaign.
